Manchester United came back from one goal deficit and stayed alive after Chris Smalling’s red card as they beat Crystal Palace by 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium after extra time. The Red Devils win their first FA Cup since 2004, when they beat Millwall by 3-0. As Wembley was covered with rising rumor this would be Louis van Gaal’s last game as Manchester United boss – with the expectations that he will be replaced by Jose Mourinho next week – he has included most spectacular cup of English football to his honours list.

It seemed that Manchester United are on the way to end the season with empty hands and in addition missing out on Champions League football – as they finished the Premier League season at fifth – when substitute Jason Puncheon’s strong header gave Crystal Palace lead with 12 minutes remaining. It was severe on United, when Marouane Fellaini and Antony Martial hit the woodwork, however they reacted within four minutes with a splendid run from Wayne Rooney that finished with Juan Mata scoring from close range.

Manchester United’s Smalling sent-off on a second yellow card for pulling back Yannick Bolasie in extra time – however Jesse Lingard helped the Old Trafford club to lift the trophy with his first-time strike from Damien Delaney’s half-clearance after 110 minutes. All the messages in and around Wembley Stadium before and during this FA Cup final indicated this Wembley masterpiece denoting the end of Van Gaal’s unexceptional two-year spell in charge.

At the time when his anticipated replacement with Mourinho is affirmed, the 64-year-old Dutchman can at any rate assume delight and acknowledgment for returning Manchester United on the ways of winning trophy for the first time since the resignation of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. And this was another display in a way that has turned into their FA Cup template this season, driving on through times of difficulty to in the long run leave the other side successful, something for which Van Gaal deserves acclaim.

Manchester United and Crystal Palace will be in front of each other in the FA Cup final on May 21, 2016 at Wembley Stadium. Manchester United beat Everton by 2-1 in the first semi-final at Wembley on Saturday and reached into a record-equalling 19th FA Cup final. In the second semi-final on Sunday, Crystal Palace knocked-out Watford after a hard-fought 2-1 win. The final match on 21 May will be a repeat of the 1990 final, which United won after a replay.

Marouane Fellaini put Manchester United ahead in the first-half with a goal from close range – but they were then very thankful to goalkeeper David de Gea as he superbly saved the penalty of Romelu Lukaku early in the second half. Everton revitalized following an inactive first half that saw them sneered off in the break and they levelled the score with 15 minutes left when Chris Smalling redirected Gerard Deulofeu’s shot into his own net. Then Anthony Martial’s stoppage time header on Ander Herrera’s poked pass prevented the game to go into the extra time and gave manager Louis van Gaal a much needed victory.

Yannick Bolasie gave Crystal Palace the lead in the 6th-minute at Wembley on Sunday when Damien Delaney flipped on Yohan Cabaye’s shot. Watford, who lost midfielder Etienne Capoue due to injury in the early part of game, drew level when Troy Deeney bobbed home on Jose Manuel Jurado’s corner. Then Connor Wickham confirmed Crystal Palace’s place in their first FA Cup final since 1990 on Pape Souare’s cross shot six minutes later. In 1990 final, manager Alan Pardew was a part of Crystal Palace team when they also faced Manchester United and they lost to the Red Devils by 1-0 in the replay after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the original tie.

Manchester United have reached in the FA Cup semi-finals after beating West Ham United by 2-1 in a quarter-final replay at Upton Park on Wednesday. Now the Red Devils will face Everton in the semi-final at Wembley Stadium on 23 April. In the final FA Cup game at Upton Park before the Hammers move to the Olympic Stadium, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal once again engineered a result when he needed it most.

After a goalless first half, Marcus Rashford gave Van Gaal’s men the lead within ten minutes of the second half, the 18-year-old collecting a pass from Anthony Martial before curling a magnificent finish into the top corner past West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph. And when Marouane Fellaini bundled in Martial’s cross 13 minutes later it looked all over – only for West Ham to mount a fierce siege in the closing minutes.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who gave a virtuoso display, had already saved superbly from Michail Antonio when James Tomkins stooped bravely among flying footwear to head in and give West Ham hope with 11 minutes left. The hosts finally hammered at United’s defence with De Gea saving once more from Andy Carroll and Cheikhou Kouyate, the latter ruled narrowly offside as he headed in a rebound. De Gea was at his best for Manchester United, making eight saves which included a fantastic double save to deny Kouyate and Carroll.

With England and club captain Wayne Rooney coming on for the final four minutes in his first appearance in two months after a knee injury, it ended as a very satisfactory night for Van Gaal and his side. Manchester United defender Phil Jones described this tie as a “defining moment” in their season – and manager Van Gaal has had plenty of those as he has been surrounded by speculation about his future.

A late equaliser from Manchester United’s Anthony Martial in a 1-1 draw against West Ham United gave manager Louis van Gaal an FA Cup quarter-final replay at Upton Park. While playing at Old Trafford on Sunday, Dimitri Payet’s 68th minute header seemed to have put the Hammers on track for a semi-final at Wembley. His superb free-kick from 30 yards threatened to heap further misery on Van Gaal.

Manchester United, however, were revitalised by the introduction of Bastian Schweinsteiger for the struggling Marouane Fellaini and Martial ensured the teams would meet again at the Boleyn Ground with a far-post finish seven minutes from time. Michael Carrick shot just wide and De Gea saved superbly from Michail Antonio in a frantic finale – while West Ham were frustrated earlier when referee Martin Atkinson ignored penalty appeals after Payet fell under challenge from Marcos Rojo.

In amongst the wreckage of this traumatic season for Manchester United, the £36m purchase of Martial has been one of the few shining lights. And the 20-year-old came to the rescue of Van Gaal just as West Ham looked on course to knock the home team out of the FA Cup. Martial was tireless throughout and got his reward when he reacted first at the far post, turning in Ander Herrera’s cross as Diafra Sakho hesitated.

If Manchester United had gone out here, Van Gaal would have been left banking on his side delivering the sort of comeback they currently look incapable of producing as they try to overturn Liverpool’s 2-0 lead in the last 16 of the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday. It would have left Van Gaal effectively facing the end of Manchester United’s season – and almost certainly the end of his reign at the end of the season. Martial’s goal at least gives Van Gaal and United something extra to fight for in the quarter-final replay.

Arsenal ended a run of five games without a win by beating Hull City 4-0 in an FA Cup fifth-round replay to secure a place in the quarter-final against Watford. The Gunners were gifted the lead when Hull’s David Meyler set up Olivier Giroud to slot home. Aaron Ramsey almost scored an own goal to let Hull back in but Giroud volleyed in to extend Arsenal’s lead. Theo Walcott wrapped up the victory for the holders when he side-footed in and then rifled in a late shot.

Giroud celebrated the birth of his baby boy on Monday and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hoped it would inspire him to break his 11-game scoring drought. The France striker was restored to the starting line-up, along with fellow forward Walcott, but the pair initially struggled against Hull, who had not conceded in six previous home games. The Tigers were employing a three centre-back formation and rarely looked like being breached until Meyler’s mistake allowed Giroud to slot in his first goal since 13 January.

Walcott’s form has also been a concern and, although he looked short of confidence, he set up Giroud’s second before looking like his former self when his late double gave him his first goals in five games. Despite a return to winning ways for manager Arsene Wenger’s side, some Arsenal fans held up a banner reading ‘Arsene, thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye’.

The priority for both of these teams are their league campaigns as Arsenal remain in the hunt for the Premier League title, while Hull are challenging for promotion from the Championship. The home side made seven changes and the Gunners six, with the visitors forced into more of a reshuffle when centre-back Per Mertesacker went off injured early on after a clash of heads with Nick Powell.
