]]>While the FA works out whether England will play their scheduled friendlies beside Italy and Denmark later this month or in the continent-wide Euro 2020 in the summer, Gareth Southgate aspects a few great decisions of his individual.
The England manager is sweltering on the capability of forwards Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, but he has no such apprehensions when it comes to attacking midfielders. Euro Cup fans can purchase England Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.

Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli started for England in the World Cup semi-final in 2018, but Alli is clingy on to his place in the team and Lingard will almost certainly miss out. Southgate is facing a puzzle: who should come into the team and who should start in that slot behind the forwards?
Oxlade-Chamberlain is not the first choice at the club level but Southgate is a big follower, mainly in light of the tactical adaptability that he offers to the side.
The 26-year-old, who has missed the earlier three major tournaments through the wound, should pick up enough minutes before the end of the term to cut.
Ross Barkley is a striking form at just the right time and is another Southgate favorite. He made six appearances in the Euro 2020 qualifiers and had a hand in seven goals, counting four and setting up three more.
His supports in Bulgaria and Montenegro meant that Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were the only England players who scored more often in qualifying. Barkley has also been outstanding for Chelsea recently.

He has counted two goals and set up four more in his last seven national starts. His experience at the international level will likely earn him a place in the team.

Maddison made his England entrance in November when he came on for Oxlade-Chamberlain in a 7–0 victory over Montenegro in qualifying.
At the time, he was a frontrunner for the playmaker role in the squad but his form has dipped badly in the last few months. He has not counted or set up a goal in his previous 11 matches in all competitions for Leicester.
However, his inspiration and ability over a dead ball will stand him in good stead. No Englishman has more key passes in the Premier League this term.
Jack Grealish offers something diverse to the rest of the players on this list, but he has still not gained an England cap. He has not even been called into a team before, with Southgate seemingly unsure where the Villa captain would fit into the side.
His form has been inspiring this season, counting seven goals and laying on six assists for a squad in the relegation zone. Only Kevin De Bruyne has shaped more chances from open play in the Premier League.
Grealish carries the ball remarkably well and draws more fouls than you can count in most competitions but, given Southgate’s previous reticence, the 24-year-old remains an outside bet.
Mason Mount finally finished his three-month, 18-game wait for a goal at the weekend when he opened the counting for Chelsea in their 4-0 thrashing of Everton.

His return to the scoresheet could be energetic. Mount does not have Maddison’s creativity or Grealish’s drooling ability but instead relies on his intelligent movement to pick up goal-scoring positions.
At 21, his potential is superb, but he needs to finish the term as strongly as he started it to make the squad. One thing for sure is that Chelsea’s match against Villa this weekend will be huge for the hopefuls involved.

]]>Chris Smalling is my Roma player of the season, as things stand. His closest competitor is Edin Dzeko, and that’s probably about it. I would have put Amadou Diawara in the running, but another season of injuries and lack of continuity has put paid to Diawara’s claim. So it really falls down to Smalling, a player who’s been crucial to Roma’s success by any measure. fans can buy England Euro Cu Tickets online.
If you like stats, he’s regularly (and often by some distance, even over Diawara) the player who intercepts the most passes in the team. If you like tactics, you know those interceptions are crucial to how Fonseca’s Roma likes to turn defence into attack.

If you like personality, Smalling has won everyone and their mother over in the city of Roma, while his on-pitch charisma often paves the way forward for teammates to keep confidence under even the most difficult of scorelines – not least of all central defensive partner Gianluca Mancini who, truth be told, has struggled (even if constantly improving) on defending for the best part of the season.
But where Smalling excels at reading the danger and aggressively cutting an opponent, he has never been the best passer for the ball. And this is exactly where Gianluca Mancini is a real talent.
This is also where England manager Gareth Southgate came out this week to openly regret criticizing this part of Smalling’s game when Southgate left the defender out of his 2018 World Cup team.

Southgate is one of many younger coaches today who value playing the ball from the end line. The goal is to get your opponents to close your four (or three) back players, so as to get even the deepest opponents out of their cage and park the bus.
With Chris Smalling in a Roma shirt, it didn’t seem like a problem. However, Southgate will be aware that Smalling has found a club and a coach whose football does a good job of masking Smalling’s faults.
When we wrote for the first time on Fonseca Football last summer, we pointed out that Roma was finally hiring a coach who could (ironically, given the transfers made at the time) bring out the best in Kostas Manolas.
With a short and compact team that focuses on supporting the man on the ball, you don’t even have to be a good passer or a daring passer, you just need to know how to pass it to 5 meters from his teammate (Pau Lopez, Mancini and / or Diawara) who can do this job for you.
That’s partly what’s helped Smalling re-find his career-high form in Rome; he’s been protected from doing the stuff he often doesn’t enjoy, giving him more time to focus on what he excels at.
With Amadou Diawara in the team especially, Roma’s compact shape on the pitch has been freakishly metronomic; Roma almost always take up no more than an average 20-23 metres length of space on the pitch between all 11 players when Diawara is marshaling things in front of Smalling.

There have been exceptions of course; most notably the Fiorentina away game where Diawara was being shouted at by both Fonseca and Dzeko for different mistakes mid-match and, subsequently, the team’s shape stretched by 11 metres in the second half, leaving gaps that Roma still managed to plug on the day.
They still walked off the pitch with a 4-1 victory on that day, but it shows just how influential Diawara’s confidence is to keeping the team moving as one.

Sterling said It would be an important step. In our country, there are still many people who are a little locked in on themselves. I think such success could push them to open up.

Shaw has not participated in England’s last 15 games under Gareth Southgate since playing against Spain in the Nations League 17 months ago.
But after missing the Euro 2016 and 2018 World Cup teams, the 24-year-old defender hopes he has done enough for United this season to find a spot on the Southgate team. England will face Croatia, Czech Republic and Play-off Winner C in group D.

“I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it,” admitted Shaw.
Whatever happens, I have to keep working hard. Obviously, it’s everyone’s dream to participate in the Euros. At the end of the day, it’s not mine, it’s Gareth’s and I will respect whatever he decides.

Despite fierce competition for his place in the back left of Brandon Williams this season, Shaw rose to the challenge. He also performed well on the left side of a counter three and, against Watford on Sunday, filled both roles with Dan James alternating winger and winger in a 3-0 victory.
“We did a lot of work on it in training, the new shape that allows us to be more compact and stronger in defense,” added Shaw.
I really enjoy it right now and I’m happy to play wherever the manager wants me to play.
I really like this kind of left of the three, but I’m going to play anywhere and the most important thing is, you know, helping the team and enjoying football.
I think I learn different things in this third role. Sometimes things you don’t really get in the back left, maybe because you’re a little bit wider, but I’m more central.
I was pretty central against Watford. We worked on it, so that I would be more central and that Jamo would play the role of the rear wing, but obviously less defensive when they had the ball.
Shaw said about Williams, We have presented that we can play together as well and I love to play with Williams. We have played a few times now and we have played well together. I learn what he does and he knows what I do, so it’s a good partnership to play.
“Obviously, we all love the competition and we all like to push each other and I will help him as much as he can to become a great player as he can be.”
Shaw also became a father for the first time in November when his partner Anouska Santos gave birth to his son Reign.
Talking about the lack of sleep, he said: It was sometimes difficult, as everyone knows! But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

It is the best feeling to have been a parent and he has a wonderful mother who takes care of him. I am often absent and I have a lot of games, so she does everything but she did brilliantly.
We have a big family around us and we have a lovely maternity nurse who comes sometimes and does the night. Everything is really good and it’s the best feeling in the world to have a child – I love it.

The misery of the Three Lions – which Southgate knows pretty well after his Euro 96 foul against Germany – continues to roar, but this time around, there are a lot of young talents who are suggesting a change of fortune at the horizon.
The top four teams in the third position from the six groups will also enter the last-16.

It was not a big end of the month for Raheem Sterling, after Manchester City’s expulsion from the Champions League for the next two years.

But that minor problem aside, he remains the guy of choice for England with Kane seated on the sidelines and must be wrapped in fluffy cotton.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is widely regarded as the best back-to-back in the world, mainly because of his sensational crossing ability and his raiding up and down to the right. And this evaluation, according to 90 minutes, is absolutely perfect. What a baller.
Winning trophies and hoisting them above his head is a feeling that Henderson has become so familiar in Liverpool. And that’s something he may have to prepare for, with the severity of Kane’s injury still in the air.
There comes a point in some players’ careers when every club in the world would like to sign you up. Right now, Jadon Sancho is that player. Sorry, Borussia Dortmund.
Joe Gomez played last 11 Liverpool’s matches in Premier League. At the time, Liverpool won all 11 games, kept 10 clean sheets and had a 25-point lead at the top of the table.
It was also a quiet month for Kane, with a recovery on the agenda. The only thing that happened to notice? His Heung-min is now a better player than him for the Spurs. Eek.
Crashed, recovering and twiddling his thumbs, it was probably a bit of a boring month for Rashford. However, he is a heavyweight player on this side of England and nothing will change that anytime soon.
The good old slab head scored against Chelsea in Manchester United’s recent 2-0 victory. It’s good. The good old slab head kicked Michy Batshuayi in the nuts during the same match. It’s bad. Swings and roundabouts, huh?

It was another difficult month for Leicester, but not bad for Chilwell – who scored in the recent draw with Chelsea.
So, with that in mind, he’s still the reigning, defending and undisputed left-back (thanks to Paul Heyman for that) on this side of England.
All we’ve heard over the past month is which would work best for Manchester United; James Maddison or Jack Grealish?
But, in reality, we should really ask, can Gareth Southgate find a way to accommodate the two on his English side? Probably not, but he could try.
The only thing you need at a big international tournament is the stability between the sticks.
Unfortunately, in Jordan, Pickford, England has the opposite at the moment – with more errors leading to a rather strange explosion in which the Everton cap tried its increasing criticism.
Oddly enough, I think I could have found the solution: stop making mistakes, Jordan!
The Spurs win the Premier League games again, which proves that José Mourinho still has it after all.
One of the key ingredients for renewal in North London has been the form of Harry Winks in the midfield. Dynamic, graceful, industrious and beautiful – four simple adjectives that Mourinho has certainly used in press conferences to describe it.
Goals aren’t so regular for Tammy recently, who remembers having a brother named Timmy, but there is nothing to suggest that a place won’t be guaranteed.
So let’s focus on something else, remembering that his first name is actually Kevin.
If Jack Grealish is not in the England team for this European championship, it will be a crime against football.
No, stop thinking about the famous Daniel Radcliffe card in this alternative game, just focus on what Grealish does well for Villa – and that’s a lot, a lot.
Trips haven’t really played out since England’s last options update, with groin tension that left them out of the procedures. Yet at least he did nothing wrong at the time.
Southampton is higher and lower than my childhood yo-yo, but they have one constant thing for them – the goals scored by Danny Ings.

DIngs, as we will now lovingly call him, has 15 Premier League goals this season and recently whipped a pearl against Burnley’s former employers. But Gareth, for Christ’s sake, doesn’t put it on the front post when defending corners.
In our previous edition of this series, in case we haven’t already mentioned it, we recommend watching the Netflix biopic The Two Popes for more information on Burnley’s keeper and his identical twin brother. This point is still valid.
Poor old Dec really hasn’t had a happy time recently, with West Ham in the absolutely dreadful form under the irresistible David Moyes.
It doesn’t bode well for his credentials in England, but there’s no question he’s up to it – probably needs Ant by his side, remember …
The end of January / beginning of February was not particularly inspiring for Oxlade-Chamberlain on a personal level, but he still has a time whale on the wave of the Liverpool juggernaut.
And who doesn’t like to have a winner’s mentality in the locker room, huh?
Lord knows what sometimes goes on in John Stones’ mind, but these are certainly not thoughts you want your central defenders to have.
Still, Stones holds on to his place for his dear life – largely because there aren’t many other quality options available for poor Gareth.
The goalkeeper’s third place (underestimated word) in the England team has been talking about the city in, uh, goalkeeper circles for quite some time now – and it now looks like a race that Dean Henderson will no doubt win.
Indeed, Hendo is damn good and his only rival for the spot – Tom Heaton – is almost certainly done for the season by injury.
Previously, on the 90-minute Who’s on the Plane series, we had chosen only three central defenders. Looking back, it was probably a mistake.
To compensate for this, we selected Mings – a prolific tackler this season – to fill the void, just ahead of Fikayo Tomori, who usefully lost his place at Chelsea at the right time.

“I have been given the chance to play week after week. I want to play football again – with the euros in the summer, I want to put myself in the window.”
And that’s exactly what Danny Rose is doing in Newcastle – first, getting out of the bench in a 0-0 draw against Norwich, before starting pumping 4-0 at Arsenal.
Then Rose had a ruck with Toon fans on the train to Tyneside – what other evidence do you need to suggest that it MUST be included?
The three England goalkeepers for this European Championship seem to be dead certainties, but Aaron Ramsdale will always keep the hope of getting into Gareth’s thoughts.
Chris Smalling and Fikayo Tomori meanwhile, still hope to make their way into the central defensive configuration, while Kyle Walker, Reece James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams are hoping for additional nods.
Mason Mount may feel aggrieved at being knocked down in the midfield, but he is in good company – Dele Alli and Callum Hudson-Odoi are always outside to watch and have to do more to get in.

Upstairs, the fit Dominic Calvert-Lewin is an outside bet, while Callum Wilson and Mason Greenwood are also waiting behind the scenes, if an injury-ravaged the Three Lions.

England lost to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, and more recently to the Czech Republic in qualifying for Euro 2020, but Gareth Southgate will be very pleased with a draw that resulted in ‘England to stay away from the biggest teams in Europe.

There was also the push to win a draw to guarantee that England’s three group games will be played at Wembley. The tournament spans 12 cities across the continent, with the semi-finals and the final also taking place in Wembley.
The third team in the group will come from a jump-off course which includes Scotland, as well as Israel, Norway, and Serbia.
The “group of death” is undoubtedly group F, with Germany, winner of the 2014 World Cup, France, reigning world champion, and Portugal, winner in Europe.
England would meet second place in Group F in the round of 16 if they won Group D, and meet the winner of Group E – which includes Spain, Poland, and Sweden – if they finished second. But Southgate made it clear that he would aim for nothing less than the top of the group.
If you can win and be seeded, you can take control of your own destiny. Hopefully, we will have this decision to make, we must have confidence in our own abilities and face those who come.
“I never know what a good draw is. We have played at least two of the teams before and for us playing Wembley is something very special and we are really looking forward to the tournament.”
Turkey was drawn with Italy, Switzerland, and Wales in group A, avoiding the more delicate group B where away trips to Russia and Denmark awaited as well as the ranked no.1 team worldwide, Belgium.
The first time, Euro Cup 2020 to be played across the world, using 12 different countries from Dublin to Baku, starting on Friday, June 12 in Rome and culminating on Sunday, July 12 in London.

A: Wales, Switzerland, Turkey, Italy.
B: Belgium, Russia, Denmark, Finland.
C: Austria, Netherlands, Ukraine, Georgia/North Macedonia/Kosovo/Belarus.
D: England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland/Norway/Serbia/Israel.
E: Sweden, Poland, Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina/Slovakia, Ireland/Northern Ireland.

It’s still the moment: eight months after the last big tournament in England, they are back in the battle for a place at the next one – the Euros 2020. Gareth Southgate’s men are (whisper it) nailed to the favorites to dominate their qualifying group, which includes Bulgaria, Montenegro, Kosovo and tonight’s opponents – arguably the toughest of the lot – the Czech Republic.
Southgate stayed with many players who exceeded expectations so gloriously last summer while showing a willingness to trust promising youngsters: his qualifying team includes Jadon Sancho, who will turn 19 next week and impress in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, 20, who got his first call after changing allegiance from the Republic of Ireland.
After injuries saw four players withdraw, Southgate drafted a few late additions: Southampton free-kick specialist James Ward-Prowse, 24, and peloton baby, 18-year-old Chelsea winger Callum Hudson -Odoi – even if he has yet to make a Premier League debut.
England v Czech Republic (kick-off at 7:45 p.m.). All the action from the first match of Group A of the two teams at Wembley Stadium. Historically, the Czechs have a better record than England in this competition, having won the tournament under the name of Czechoslovakia in 1976 and also finished second in their current appearance in 1996, when England, host country, got its best result in the competition as semi-finalists.

In recent years, both teams have qualified consistently unless the three Lions reach Euro 2008. However, English football is at its peak after fourth place in the World Cup in last summer and qualifying for the UEFA Nations League semi-finals, Gareth Southgate’s men will expect nothing less than three points tonight. Presents by Mark Pougatch, with analysis by Lee Dixon and Ian Wright and comments by Glenn Hoddle and Clive Tyldesley.
