Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham have suffered a worse fate than their north London neighbor, having won only two of their previous nine matches in all competitions. They come up against an Everton side in similar peril, with the Toffees teetering precariously above the drop zone.
No team in the top flight faces a bigger week than Southampton however, with the Saints coming off the back of last week’s 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Leicester. They were beaten in the Carabao Cup action by Man City in midweek, and have the difficult task of trying to contain them for the second time in a matter of days at the Etihad.
With City odds-on to pick up a win, added pressure is on Liverpool to maintain their six-point lead in the table. The Reds have a tricky trip to Aston Villa to overcome, with the hosts unbeaten in their last four at home. Meanwhile, Man Utd travel south as they bid to string a run of results together in Saturday’s 12:30 pm kick-off.
The Red Devils have won all three of their matches since drawing with Liverpool a fortnight ago but meet Bournemouth who has lost just once at the Vitality Stadium this season. In Saturday’s other televised pick Chelsea head to basement club Watford, while Leicester is in action on the box at Selhurst Park on Sunday at 2 pm.
Elsewhere, relegation battlers, Norwich and Newcastle are both away from home, with ties at Brighton and West Ham respectively.

The Argentine, 44, was appointed in May 2014 on a five-year deal and guided Spurs to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and a League Cup final in his first season in charge. Tottenham Hotspur were challenging for the Premier League title until a bad-tempered 2-2 draw at Chelsea last week ensured Leicester City were crowned champions of England. Pochettino has created a fast and powerful side with a backbone of young English players such as striker Harry Kane, defender Eric Dier and midfielder Dele Alli, who have all received their first international caps during the Argentine’s tenure.
He was photographed having lunch with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week, prompting rumours he could be a target for the Old Trafford team this summer. However, the former Paris St-Germain player believes he can bring trophies to Tottenham. “We have a long-term project and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future,” added Pochettino.

]]>Tottenham Hotspur produced an outstanding display to thrash Stoke City by 4-0 and move five points behind leaders Leicester City with four games of the season remaining. Harry Kane’s sublime curling finish, his 23rd Premier League goal of the season, set them on their way before Christian Eriksen hit the crossbar. Dele Alli doubled the lead before he hit a post when it was easier to score. Kane rolled in the third, which was his 24th, before Alli’s right-foot volley wrapped up Spurs’ ninth away league win of the season.
The result lifted Mauricio Pochettino’s side to 68 points from 34 matches, with Leicester on 73 from the same number of games. Tottenham Hotspur’s travelling fans at the Britannia Stadium chanted “Leicester City – we’re coming for you” after Alli’s chip made it 2-0. Had Spurs lost, Leicester could have been champions next Monday, but the visitors were in control from start to finish as they turned on the style on what could be a pivotal day in the race for the title.

Alli was close to joining Liverpool while still at MK Dons, but the Reds stalled on the deal, allowing Spurs to seize the advantage. But Pochettino admits he has been surprised by the speed of Alli’s progress. “There is always a question mark with a young player,” he said. You can assess his left and right foot, his performance on the pitch and in training. But how a young player can be affected by the big things that happen in football – being a senior player, being in the national team – this is always a question mark. “All the same, it has surprised us how he has shown maturity.”

Spurs are on second place in league table with a difference of two points from leaders Leicester with 11 matches to play. Mauricio Pochettino side have not gone on the top of table since the first week of the 2009-10 season, but former Chelsea manager Ranieri thinks the London club can end their 55-year wait for a top-flight title. “Tottenham Hotspur are strong in any circumstances,” said the Italian, whose team is going to host West Bromwich Albion tonight at 19:45 GMT.
Spurs could go top with a win at West Ham on Wednesday, should the Foxes slip up against West Brom. Arsenal are three points adrift of their London rivals in third, with Manchester City another four points back in fourth, albeit with a game in hand. Ranieri believes his side’s exploits this season have allowed Tottenham Hotspur to avoid the usual attention generated by a title challenge. “Everyone is speaking about Leicester but nobody about Tottenham,” he said.
“Tottenham Hotspur, in my opinion, are favourites. When they defend and when they attack, they know what they want. “We are the surprise, that is fantastic, a good energy, but if we are realistic the real competitors are Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.” Ranieri may be reluctant to speak about his side’s title hopes, but West Brom counterpart Tony Pulis is hoping the Foxes can hold off their rivals. “The divide between the big clubs and everyone else is enormous. It would give everyone hope. You want to see the underdog do well.
“It would be a wonderful, wonderful achievement. I hope they see it through.” Clough took Forest to their first – and only – domestic league title a year after winning promotion to the top flight, later winning two European Cups. “It’d be that big,” said Pulis. “But it was different then. The divide then wasn’t as great as the divide is now between those who’ve got it and those who haven’t got it. “The Premier League wasn’t in place, so you’d most probably put this in front of that.”

The ties have been scheduled on Thursday, 10 and 17 March. Liverpool’s home game will start at 20:05 GMT with the second leg at Old Trafford starting at 18:00 GMT. Gary Neville’s Valencia will face fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, whereas Sevilla – the holders of the last two Europa League trophies – will play against Basel.
