Chelsea needs to be patient with Christian Pulisic and allow the American to settle in at the club, says USA coach Greg Berhalter. The 21-year-old, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £58million deal from Borussia Dortmund, has struggled to nail down a regular spot under Frank Lampard, making just three starts. Christian has shown glimpses of what he can do as an impact player, coming off the bench to set up winning goals against Newcastle and Ajax. And Berhalter believes the winger is under pressure to deliver because he was the sole new signing at the club this summer. “There’s a lot of pressure that he’s under. He is at a big club,” Berhalter told The Guardian after watching Pulisic in action in Amsterdam.

“What I really like about where he is right now is that there are a lot of young players. There is a manager who is used to working with young players, has that philosophy who wants to build this club with this group of talent, and he fits perfectly into that mold.
“I think Frank Lampard has been trying to say: ‘the outside stuff is not real, it’s really not’ – when you analyze the transfer fee when you analyze who he’s replacing when you analyze he’s the only guy they bought. That’s not real. What’s real is this kid is in the Premier League, trying to make his name, trying to perform. That’s the only thing that counts.”
There is a rumor over whether Pulisic will be loaned out in January – something Lampard completely denied. Berhalter highlighted the examples of Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne to show why Chelsea must not give up on Pulisic and allow him time to adapt to life in the Premier League.
Christian Pulisic Reveals Frank Lampard’s advice:
Pulisic has exposed Frank Lampard told him to ‘make a difference’ before coming on for Chelsea in their Champions League win over Ajax. Pulisic impressed after being brought off the bench for the final 20 minutes of the European clash in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening. Summer arrival saw a shot fly just wide and another which fell to Michy Batshuayi, who blasted over the bar, before he provided the Belgian with the assist for the decisive goal late on.
Christian endured a slow start to his career at Chelsea but is beginning to show his worth to the Premier League club and said: ‘I was really happy to be given another opportunity to go on. “He [Lampard] told me to go on and make an impact, make a difference, and I was happy I was able to help a little bit.”

‘He said ‘great job’ at the end, he was really happy I came on and made a difference.’ “We had five wins in a row before this, and another away win, a big one in the Champions League, is really important for us. It gives us even more confidence to keep it up. We want to go and make it seven now.” Former Borussia Dortmund star Pulisic has only made one start for Chelsea since the end of August but has vowed to ‘keep fighting’ as he looks to develop into a key player for Lampard.
‘I’m never going to let that put me down, not playing,’ he said. ‘I am going to keep fighting because this is where I want to be. ‘I came here for a reason, I want to be here and make a difference. Whenever I get the opportunity I am going to keep working hard to do that.’ Chelsea has enjoyed a fine start to the season both domestically and in Europe and Pulisic added: ‘The whole team has come together.
“We have a great mix of youth and experienced players. The team spirit definitely doesn’t need to be questioned. It’s there. ‘Me being the only American I can go with some of the French guys, some of the Brazilians. It’s nice, it’s a good mix. ‘It’s been great getting to know all the guys. I am really happy with how it’s going.”
