Premier League: Jose Mourinho explains why Manchester United does well in big games

Man United have beaten Tottenham, Chelsea, and Leicester this season and are the only Premier League team to have taken a point off Liverpool. Jose Mourinho says Manchester United have the personnel to overcome the Premier League’s better teams following defeat on his Old Trafford return with Tottenham Hotspur.

United have beaten fourth-placed Chelsea twice, second-placed Leicester and Champions League finalists Tottenham, and are the only league side to have taken a point off leaders Liverpool this term. United also defeated Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s caretaker reign. Although United thrashed 4-0 against Chelsea in their season opener, they held on against Leicester and Liverpool and did so again against Tottenham in their 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.

United switched to a back three against Liverpool and Chelsea in the League Cup, but resisted the switch for the visit of Mourinho’s Spurs and retained Solskjaer’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Mourinho felt the deep-lying duo of Scott McTominay and Fred protected the back four, where the ‘giant’ Harry Maguire neutered any aerial threat Tottenham posed.

“I think is just the way it is,” Mourinho said of United’s big-game record. “And you look to united results this season against the best teams, they had good results.

“I think at home when they play like they did Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester, also a great team this season, they always had this kind of attitude. I think it’s easier for them, the way they play.

“They are not afraid to be with a defensive approach, they are not afraid to be at home, to take their time, to be in control of the emotions of the game. Then lots of young people with lots of energy and good mentality and when they are winning matches.

“They are comfortable in this situation of a low block and a giant dominating in the air and being fast in counter-attack with Marcus Rashford, with James, with Jesse Lingard, with Anthony Martial when he plays.

“So I think the way they play is easier for them when they play against teams that are better teams, teams that want more of the ball, to have an initiative of the game, so I think they did well.

“They played the game they wanted to play in the second half, they dropped the block, they defend, a couple of dangerous counter-attacks, closing, closing, closing, and when we had the ball in the last third the goal could happen but didn’t.

“And I think they deserve the victory.”
