Premier League: Liverpool have a big problem with a star player, and it’s affecting the whole team

The Liverpool are seeing their injury problems mount up, and one, in particular, is a cause for concern.

Andy Robertson is not fit

Anyone with a degree of interest in Liverpool’s opening 30 minutes against Brighton and Hove Albion could see so. The Scot has been nursing an ankle injury since the Manchester City win and is clearly still struggling with it. Robertson made only 62 passes all game, with none in the opposition penalty box. His zero take-owns and seven ball recoveries were significantly down from what he usually posts, as was his none out of two attempted successful crosses.

The first 30 minutes feels pertinent to mention, as that is where the players seem at his most rigid. The cold December air clearly isn’t helping to loosen his joints, and it is clearly having a wider effect on the Liverpool team and setup.

There were few surprises in the Reds lineup for yesterday’s 2-1 win at Anfield. However, many anticipated Gini Wijnaldum dropping into the number six role as he did following an injury to Fabinho in Wednesday’s draw with Napoli, therefore it was surprising to see Jordan Henderson back in a position he occupied for so long.

Yet the decision could have as much to do with Robertson as the midfielder’s themselves. Jürgen Klopp has been keen to use and keep Henderson on the right of his industrious middle three as much as possible, but the need for Wijnaldum on the left to cover and help Robertson was crystal clear in this particular encounter. Wijnaldum gets through a raft of work as well as offering a link to the forward line. With Robertson not firing as he can due to his knock, the Dutchman’s positional sense was key all afternoon.

James Milner is back to the team

James Milner can do an able job in the role, however, his start midweek meant he was unlikely to go straight back in. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain worked tirelessly, but his crossing ability would be nullified somewhat if he had to cut back in on to his stronger foot. Naby Keita is unlikely to be trusted given the need for work-rate increase given Robertson’s situation.

Had Robertson been fully fit during this period, Klopp might feel he has more wealthy options to play around with during Fabiano’s absence. As it is, one problem seems to have been compounded by another with the left-backs on-going injury. He will hope he can shake his problem off soon, however, any chances to rest and recuperate are few and far between in the coming weeks.
